The Office of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has advised the management of the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences against sanctioning students who participated in a viral video that allegedly embarrassed the President’s wife.
The video in question showed students chanting during the First Lady’s visit to Delta State, where she donated 10,000 professional kits to midwives. While the event was intended to motivate midwives and reduce infant and maternal mortality, a section of the video showed students adding a “spontaneous and playful twist” to the welcome song.
According to a statement issued by Mrs. Tinubu’s media aide, Busola Kukoyi, “The Office of the First Lady of Nigeria respects the right of institutions to uphold discipline, however, it is important to recognize that students, in moments of excitement, often express themselves in a light-hearted and jovial manner.”
Mrs. Tinubu emphasized the importance of educational institutions fostering an environment where students feel safe to express themselves while maintaining decorum. She hopes that the event remains a positive experience for all involved and trusts that the college will handle the matter with understanding and fairness.
“We trust that the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences will handle this matter with understanding and fairness, ensuring that students continue to thrive in an environment that balances discipline with free expression,” the statement read.
