The House of Representatives has expressed sadness over the death of the Deputy Comptroller Finance Administration and Technical Services of Nigeria Custom Service, (NCS), Essien Etop Andrew who collapsed at the National Assembly.
The House of Representatives broke the news in a statement by the House spokeperson, Akin Rotimi.
According to Rotimi, the incident happened while Andrew was speaking on remittance of levies into designated government account.
It was reported that Andrew had requested water in the process of the meeting when he collapsed and was rushed to the National Assembly clinic where he passed away.
Rotimi said: Andrew requested water while speaking on remittance of levies into designated government account. He paused and demanded water saying “Sir I need to take water.” “Chairman of Committee Bamidele Salam responded “You need to take water sir? Yes go ahead or if you need tea do you need tea?” Customs boss repeated “I may need to take water” and then collapsed. He was rushed to National Assembly clinic where he passed away.”
He said: “It is with deep sadness and regret that we confirm passing of esteemed official of Nigeria Customs Service who was at National Assembly for engagement with House Committee. During engagement which occurred around 1pm on Tuesday June 25 2024 official developed sudden health complications. Despite immediate and diligent efforts of first responders and medical personnel at National Assembly clinic he unfortunately passed away.”

We recognize significant contributions he made to Nigeria Customs Service and our nation. House of Representatives stands ready to support efforts to understand circumstances surrounding incident and is cooperating fully with all relevant authorities to ensure all necessary protocols are followed.
