In a bid to avert another nationwide strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Federal Government has established several committees to address pressing issues raised by the union.
This development was disclosed by ASUU’s Vice President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, in an exclusive conversation with The PUNCH on Monday.
These committees are tasked with resolving concerns surrounding the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and salary arrears.
The first meeting of the committees is scheduled for September 11, 2024, following a closed-door session between ASUU leaders and representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education, led by Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman.
“The meeting is over; committees were set up to resolve the IPPIS/EAA and salary areas stuff. The committee is to meet 11th next week,” Prof. Piwuna confirmed.
Recall that ASUU’s recent threat of a nationwide strike stems from grievances over the government’s failure to implement aspects of the renegotiated 2009 agreement, which include demands for improved welfare, better funding for universities, and a halt to the proliferation of universities across the country. These demands were reiterated after ASUU’s national executive council meeting, held at the University of Ibadan on August 19, 2024.
