The Federal Government has called on the United States to renew its partnership with Nigeria in efforts to eradicate terrorism and restore lasting peace across the country.

Speaking during an interview on Sky News, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the government has been in communication with the US authorities to strengthen cooperation on security matters.

“Channels of communication have been opened. I can confirm that we are talking with them, and I think they are beginning to understand the situation better,” Idris said.

He explained that Nigeria’s security challenges are complex and deeply rooted, adding that some of the narratives about the country’s situation stem from a misunderstanding of its realities.

“We believe that most of the information out there results from a lack of proper understanding of the diversity and complexity of the problem we have at hand,” he noted.

According to the minister, the United States has previously supported Nigeria in tackling insecurity, and renewed collaboration will further strengthen ongoing efforts to ensure peace.

“Yes, indeed, we have conflicts and security concerns in Nigeria. However, the United States government has, in the past, assisted Nigerian authorities in addressing these issues. So, we are calling on them to partner with us once again to help push this forward so that we can achieve peace once and for all in our country,” Idris said.

He also urged the international community to approach reports about Nigeria with objectivity and deeper understanding.

“We want to tell the world that some of the assumptions being circulated are based on data that cannot stand scientific scrutiny. We share the concerns of our citizens and those of the international community, including the United States, about the ongoing killings. “However, we are calling for a better understanding of the diversity and complexity of the situation,” he added.
