The Honourable Minister of State for Education, Hon Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu
said to eradicate learning poverty there is a pressing need for improved infrastructure in schools.
The Minister stated this during the 25th Quarterly Meeting of UBEC Management, where he addressed the Executive Chairmen of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) in Abuja.
He added that the government would prioritize the employment of highly qualified teachers.
Hon. Sununu emphasized that the government will put in place more efforts to address issues in the basic education sub-sector.
“The Federal Government, recognizing the significance of foundational education, established the Universal Basic Education Commission to allocate funds for the implementation of universal free basic education across the 36 states and the FCT”, the Minister added.
He further expressed his disappointment
over the growing number of out-of-school children.
The Minister urged the SUBEB Chairmen to actively address challenges in the education sector and enhance the quality of basic education.
The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr Hamid Bobboyi, disclosed that the commission has been actively involved towards addressing issues of out-of-school children.
He emphasized the need to redefine national and state priorities for effective basic education delivery in Nigeria, considering the evolving nature of education and learners’ changing needs.
The Executive Secretary noted that it is essential for stakeholders in the education sector to bring innovations that will transform the education sector.
” The world is evolving continuously, and there is an ethical obligation for stakeholders to redefine the sector. We need to revisit our state and national priorities for effective basic education delivery”, he said.
