First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has condemned the reported assault of women and girls during the Alue-Do Festival in Ozoro, Delta State, describing the incident as “barbaric” and unacceptable.
In a statement on Sunday, the First Lady said she watched viral footage showing girls being physically and sexually assaulted during the festival held in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area.
She stressed that cultural practices must not be used as a justification for abuse, noting that no tradition permits the violation of the dignity and rights of women.
“While I respect our diverse cultures and traditions, no custom grants any man the right to violate the dignity or freedom of any woman or girl,” she said.
She commended the Nigeria Police Force for making arrests in connection with the incident and called for thorough prosecution of those responsible.
“I urge all relevant authorities to ensure that all perpetrators face the full weight of the law,” she added.
The First Lady also appealed to victims of the incident to seek medical and psychological support, offering prayers for their recovery.
“I pray for your healing, peace and strength at this difficult time,” she said.
