Six members, including a grandmother and four children, died allegedly from food poisoning. The victims consumed liquid pap at their home in Oke Aro, Akure, on Saturday, and soon after, they began vomiting and complaining of stomach aches.
Mr. Ademola Adeola, the bereaved father, has called on the state government to investigate the circumstances surrounding their deaths. He stated that stated that “After taking the pap, I observed that they started vomiting and complaining of stomach. I rushed them to the General Hospital, Akure, but unfortunately, they passed away.” The children were aged nine, eight, six, and three years.
Adeola expressed concerns about the medical care provided, stating that a doctor suggested giving the children palm oil to drink and later administered drugs, which he believes led to their demise.
The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed that although the case wasn’t officially reported, police officers visited the deceased’s residence to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident .
However, Dr. Banji Ajaka, the state Commissioner for Health, disputed these allegations, emphasizing that the doctors and consultants did everything possible to save the children’s lives. “It’s not true that the hospital lacks facilities to tackle such cases. It’s unfortunate this happened, and I pray God gives the family the fortitude to bear the loss.”
