Former CJN Mohammed Uwais Dies at 89

Nigeria’s legal community is mourning the loss of former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Mohammed Uwais, who passed away at the age of 89.

His death was confirmed Fridaymorning by Ondo State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo.

Justice Uwais served as CJN from 1995 until his retirement in 2006 and was widely praised for his integrity and judicial reforms.

After retirement, he was appointed by late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to lead the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee, which included notable figures like Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, but tributes from across the legal, political, and civil society spheres are expected in the coming days.
