Kenyan athlete Edwin Kibet Koech has emerged victorious in the men’s category of the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, which took place on Saturday. This marks his second win, having previously clinched the title in 2023 .
Koech completed the marathon in a record time of 2 hours and 14 minutes, earning him the $50,000 first-place prize. The event attracted approximately 37,000 runners, who competed in the 10km and 42km races .
According to Yusuf Ali, General Manager of the race and retired Nigerian long jumper, “the figure was derived from the number of running kits distributed out of the over 60,000 runners who registered to take part.”
The 42km race commenced at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, at 6:30 am, while the 10km marathon started at the Grace Garden Event Centre in Lekki at 9:30 am. Both races concluded at Eko Atlantic City.
He disclosed that this year’s event marked the 10th anniversary of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, which has attained a World Athletics gold label.
The Organizers aim to achieve the platinum label, making it the first marathon race in Africa to reach this status.
