A violent altercation aboard an Ibom Air flight has prompted swift action from Nigerian aviation authorities and industry stakeholders, leading to a lifetime flying ban for the passenger involved and a broader call for stricter enforcement against disruptive behavior in the skies.
The incident, which occurred on August 10, 2025, began when Comfort Emmanson refused to turn off her mobile phone before takeoff, escalating into a physical confrontation upon landing in Lagos.She has since been arraigned and remanded at Kirikiri Correctional Center in Lagos.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is seeking firsthand accounts from passengers aboard Ibom Air flight Q9 303, where a female passenger, identified as Comfort Emmanson, allegedly assaulted crew members and attempted to use a fire extinguisher as a weapon .
In a statement, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mike Achimugu, emphasized the importance of gathering comprehensive information,
“In the interest of justice and fairness, it is necessary to hear both sides of the story.” He urged witnesses to contact him directly to aid the investigation.
Following the incident, Ibom Air imposed a lifetime ban on Emmanson, citing its zero-tolerance policy towards violent conduct. The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) extended this ban across all member airlines, both domestically and internationally.
AON spokesperson Prof. Obiora Okonkwo described the event as “one of the most severe cases of unruly passenger behavior witnessed this year.”
The NCAA has pledged to hold all parties accountable and is collaborating with airport security and police to ensure a thorough investigation.
Achimugu remarked, “Such events expose operational gaps despite robust regulations, allowing authorities to pluck loopholes and improve safety procedures.”
