The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a grave warning to Nigerians against scooping fuel from fallen tankers, describing the act as extremely dangerous and often fatal.
Speaking in Uyo, the Head of NEMA’s Operations Office, Ms. Aisueni Mmandu, pointed to multiple tragic incidents across the country in Niger, Jigawa, Delta, Enugu, Lagos, and Cross River states respectfully , where hundreds lost their lives and properties were destroyed due to explosion following tanker crashes.
“These accidents are not just avoidable; they are deadly. Scooping spilled fuel is like walking into a fire with your eyes open,” Mmandu said.
She identified key causes of tanker mishaps, including reckless driving, overloading, poor maintenance, bad roads, and lack of public safety awareness.
While calling for action, Mmandu urged transport unions, government agencies, and community leaders to enforce road safety regulations and educate the public on the life-threatening risks involved.
Backing NEMA’s position, FRSC Public Enlightenment Officer, Mr. Etetim Otom, appealed to tanker drivers to drive responsibly and respect other road users, noting that Prevention is the only guarantee of safety.
