Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed Yechiel Leiter, a US-born diplomat, as the country’s next ambassador to the United States. Leiter, who previously served as chief of staff in the finance ministry, brings a wealth of experience to his new role .
“Yechiel Leiter is a highly capable diplomat, an eloquent speaker, and possesses a deep understanding of American culture and politics,” Netanyahu said in a statement .Leiter’s appointment comes just three days after Donald Trump’s election to a second term as US president, a development welcomed by many Israelis due to Trump’s strong support for Israel.
The appointment has been welcomed by Yisrael Ganz, head of the Yesha Council, who praised Leiter as “a key partner in English-language advocacy for Judea and Samaria” .
Leiter’s experience and connections make him a strong fit for the role, particularly given the expected friendly approach of the incoming Trump administration towards Israeli West Bank settlements .
Leiter’s background is marked by significant roles in the Israeli government, including deputy director general in the Education Ministry and acting chairman of the Israel Ports Company .
Tragically, his son was killed in the Gaza war against Hamas last year while serving in the Israeli military.
