Nigerian musicians continue to assert their dominance on the global music stage, with the country’s artistes making up the majority of Africa’s top earners on Spotify.
According to a recent report by music statistics platform Chart Masters, Nigerian Afrobeat superstar Wizkid leads the pack, earning $1 million in monthly revenue on the streaming platform.
Wizkid’s achievement underscores the growing global appeal of Afrobeat music, which has placed Nigerian artistes at the forefront of Africa’s music industry. He is closely followed by Burna Boy, who earned $782,148, and Tems, whose monthly earnings amounted to $660,210.
The list of Africa’s top ten Spotify earners is overwhelmingly dominated by Nigerians, with only South African singer Tyla breaking through at the fourth position with $607,804. Other Nigerian artistes in the top ten include Davido, Asake, Omah Lay, Ayra Starr, and Rema, all earning hundreds of thousands of dollars monthly.
Globally, Canadian rapper Drake and American pop sensation Taylor Swift topped Spotify’s earnings chart with $7,717,904 and $7,713,106, respectively, but Nigeria’s consistent representation on the African scene demonstrates the country’s outsized influence on the continent.
