Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared his intention to run for president again in 2027, firmly stating that he would not serve as a running mate to any politician.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, Obi vowed to deliver impactful leadership within a single term, stressing that Nigeria can be steered towards recovery in just four years.
His words: “I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it.
“I don’t need a day more than four years. I will show the direction of good governance,” Obi said, even as he announced that he would run for president in 2027, and not as a running mate to any politician.
“In two years, there has been maximum damage. Two years can change it in a good direction. People want to get up and see a president that cares, that shows compassion.”
Responding to criticism surrounding his openness to work with individuals who previously served in underperforming administrations, Obi stressed the importance of learning from the past, including the missteps of those who served in previous governments.
“In fact, even some who have been in that government, their experience is critical,” Obi said.
“I can tell you one of the major companies in the world hired two people who have worked in failed companies because they can tell you why they failed.”
Obi emphasized that both success and failure provide essential insights for effective leadership.
“You need the experience of those who have failed and those who have succeeded to move on, and I need everyone. It is a critical experience because they know what can fail a system and they know what was wrong with the system,” he stated.
He also revealed that the coalition he belongs to has chosen a political party to back for the 2027 elections, emphasizing unity in pursuit of national progress.
“The coalition has just adopted a party ahead of 2027. We’re working together in the interest of Nigeria,” he stated.
Obi clarified that while he remains a committed member of the Labour Party, the coalition has agreed to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the upcoming election. He also noted that more political parties and individuals are expected to join the alliance moving forward.
