The Ogun State Government has banned graduation ceremonies for learners in Nursery, Kindergarten and all other non-terminal classes in both public and private schools across the state.
The directive was contained in a circular signed by the Director of Education (Private Schools), Bisiriyu A.A., on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
According to the circular dated June 18, 2026, graduation activities are now restricted strictly to learners in Primary Six, Junior Secondary School (JSS) 3 and Senior Secondary School (SSS) 3, who are completing recognised stages of their education.
“The organization of graduation ceremonies for learners in Nursery, Kindergarten, and all other non-terminal classes is hereby prohibited,” the ministry stated.
The government described such ceremonies as unnecessary and directed schools to discontinue the practice.
The circular further stipulated that graduation ceremonies for Primary Six, JSS 3 and SSS 3 pupils and students must be conducted modestly and at no financial cost to learners, parents or guardians.
It also prohibited the use of canopies, Aso Ebi, customised attire and other forms of extravagant social displays during graduation events.
“The use of canopies, Aso Ebi, customized attire, or any other forms of extravagant social displays during graduation ceremonies is strictly prohibited,” the circular added.
The ministry encouraged schools to place greater emphasis on academic achievement and character development rather than elaborate social events that impose financial pressure on families.
School proprietors, administrators and heads of public and private schools were directed to give the circular wide publicity and ensure strict compliance.
The government warned that any school found violating the directives would face sanctions in line with regulations governing the operation of schools in Ogun State.
