The Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has honoured Super Falcons defender, Tosin Demehin, with a cash reward of ₦30 million and a house at Sunshine Estate in Oba-Ile, Akure, in recognition of her outstanding performance at the 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, following a civic reception held in Akure on Monday.
The event celebrated indigenes of Ondo State who were part of the victorious Super Falcons squad at the tournament held in Morocco last month.
Tosin Demehin, an indigene of Ondo State, was recognised for her vital contributions to Nigeria’s success at the continental championship.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also rewarded two other members of the Super Falcons’ delegation from Ondo State, Mary Akinsola, the team’s media officer, and Mary Oduboku, the team’s secretary, with ₦15 million each for their crucial support roles during the tournament.
“This is a proud moment for us. Tosin Demehin has brought immense pride to Ondo State on the continental stage. As a token of our appreciation, we are awarding her ₦30 million and a house at Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile,” the Governor announced to an enthusiastic crowd.
Expressing his delight, Aiyedatiwa stated: “I am extremely happy to welcome home our brave daughters. Their dedication, hard work, and team spirit were instrumental in this historic victory. They have not only brought glory to Nigeria but also honoured Ondo State.”
The Governor also praised the contributions of Akinsola and Oduboku, both of whom hail from the southern senatorial district of the state, for their vital roles in the team’s successful campaign.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to youth development, Aiyedatiwa said: “We will continue to invest in young talents, create enabling environments, and provide the necessary resources to help them thrive, especially in sports.”
He further pledged renewed support for the Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure, with a commitment to ensuring the team’s swift return to the Nigerian Premier League.
Governor Aiyedatiwa commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for honouring the Super Falcons at the national level, noting that such recognition greatly boosts the morale of athletes across the country.
