The Rivers State Organized Labour has called for strict adherence to the Nigerian Constitution in addressing the state’s political situation, stressing that any move to declare a state of emergency or suspend elected officials must not jeopardize workers’ wages, job security, or overall safety.
In a statement jointly signed by Comrade Alex Agwanwor, State Chairperson of the NLC; Sir Comrade Ikechukwu Onyefuru, State Chairperson of the TUC; and Comrade Chuku Emecheta (JP), the Rivers State Organized Labour emphasized the need for constitutional adherence in addressing the state’s political situation.
“While the Rivers state Organized labour supports maintaining law and order, it insists that actions such as declaration of state of emergency and suspending elected officials must align with the Nigerian Constitution and protect workers from avoidable wage invalidity, nonpayment of salaries at all levels, safety and security threats.
“Government must prioritize the safety and welfare of its citizens over political interests.
“The federal government is strongly advised to engage in genuine dialogue to prevent further escalation of the issues in Rivers State,” the statement read.
However, the Labour group urged all workers to remain calm and continue their duties while awaiting a positive response to their concerns. It warned that if their demands are not met within a reasonable timeframe, Organized Labour may be forced to take strategic union actions that could disrupt national economic activities.
