The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to demolishing illegal structures and shanties situated around public schools in Ibadan, emphasizing the need to maintain a safe and conducive learning environment.
Justice Aderonke Aderemi (rtd.), Chairperson of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), led an inspection team to the Jemibewon area of Sabo in Ibadan, where numerous unauthorized structures have been erected adjacent to St. Gabriel’s Secondary Commercial School.
Justice Aderemi stated “We are determined to uphold the rule of law and ensure that our children learn in environments free from encroachments that pose safety risks,”
“Despite appeals and petitions, the directive issued by Governor Seyi Makinde on October 24, 2023, regarding the removal of shanties around school areas remains in effect.”
The government disclosed that prior to the demolition exercise, eviction notices were issued twice to the occupants of the illegal structures. Additionally, meetings were held with community leaders, including the ‘Seriki n Sabo’, to engage residents in dialogue and provide an ultimatum for vacating the premises.
Aderemi highlighted that the presence of these shanties not only compromises the safety of students but also serves as potential hideouts for criminal activities. “Our primary concern is the welfare of our students. Structures that harbor illicit activities cannot be tolerated near educational institutions,” she emphasized.
The demolition exercise is part of a broader initiative by the Oyo State Government to sanitize the environment and uphold public order, particularly in areas surrounding schools.
Residents and stakeholders are urged to cooperate with the authorities to ensure the success of these efforts aimed at enhancing the educational landscape of the state.
