The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has made a significant donation to a school in Chibok, Borno State, the same community that gained global attention in 2014 following the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls by Boko Haram insurgents.
In a statement shared via his official X handle, Obi revealed that he donated 10 laptops and 3 printers to the school. In addition, he contributed ₦2 million each towards the procurement of laboratory equipment, furnishing of a computer classroom, and installation of a handheld motorised borehole a gesture amounting to ₦6 million in total.
The statement reads: “ I presented them with 10 laptops and 3 printers as a start. I also donated the sum of ₦2 million each towards providing some items for the lab, the computer classroom, and a handheld motorised borehole, totalling ₦6 million.
“I promised to do more and made it clear to them that what I was doing was not a donation, but a sincere commitment and a promise to the future of our community.”
Obi used the occasion to reflect on broader national issues, describing the visit as “deeply disturbing” and a moment for serious introspection.
He questioned the nation’s spending priorities, lamenting the absence of basic educational infrastructure like laboratories, books, and pencils for students, while the political elite continue to invest billions in luxury projects such as conference centres, car parks, and opulent government lodges.
“One wonders why we live in a nation where our students don’t have labs, books, or even pencils, while our leaders live in opulence,” he said.
Obi emphasised the urgent need to prioritise education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation as core pillars of development.
