Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the Federal Government over the alleged failure to pay match allowances owed to members of the national football team, the Super Eagles.
Peter Obi described the situation as embarrassing and unacceptable.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Obi lamented what he called the constant stream of troubling developments in the country.
He noted that at a time when Nigerians need joy and unity, the Super Eagles have been lifting national morale through their performances on the international stage.
Obi expressed concern that despite their efforts and victories, the players were being denied their basic match bonuses.
“A country that writes off trillions in debts for government agencies and political allies, and squanders money on grandiose, self-serving projects, now struggles to pay the basic match bonuses owed to our players,” Obi wrote.
The former Anambra State governor said Nigeria’s image was being damaged by the failure to honour previously agreed allowances, especially ahead of a crucial quarter-final match, adding that the situation was an avoidable distraction for the team.
“The Super Eagles do not deserve this embarrassment. Nigeria must learn to fulfill its obligations,” he added.
