In a renewed effort to tackle cult-related violence, Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of 44-year-old Bashiru Saidu, who was gunned down by four unidentified assailants on motorcycles along Bankole Onibukun Street in Atan-Ota on Sunday night.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident in a statement
She said: “The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into a fatal cult-related incident that claimed the life of one individual in the Atan-Ota area of the state.”
In response, Commissioner of Police Lanre Ogunlowo has deployed the Anti-Cultism Unit to the area, emphasizing the command’s commitment to eradicating cultism. “The command strongly condemns all forms of cult-related violence and reiterates its commitment to rooting out cultism and restoring peace and security across the state,” Odutola added.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges posed by cult-related violence in Ogun State. Governor Dapo Abiodun has previously declared cult activities as acts of terrorism, warning, “From today, we are considering cult members and other criminals as saboteurs to the economy… We will consider them as terrorists, I will deal with them as such.”
To bolster legal actions against cultism, the state government has established a special court dedicated to trying cult-related cases, aiming to expedite justice and deter future offenses.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station, as authorities continue efforts to restore peace and security in the region.
