Pope Francis has called for urgent ethical oversight in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and modern communication platforms, warning that their misuse could destabilize societies and manipulate public perception. In a message read on his behalf during his New Year’s address to diplomats, the pontiff highlighted the need for responsible governance of technology in an era of increasing misinformation and societal division.
The 88-year-old pope pointed to the rapid growth of AI-driven technologies and social media as double-edged tools, capable of connecting people but also spreading falsehoods and fostering polarization.
He said, “This phenomenon generates false images of reality, a climate of suspicion that foments hate, undermines people’s sense of security and compromises civil coexistence and the stability of entire nations.”
Francis stressed the need for media literacy as a countermeasure, urging leaders to promote critical thinking skills in a landscape increasingly shaped by digital narratives. He lamented the erosion of civil discourse, saying misinformation “creates false images of reality, undermines trust, and compromises the stability of entire nations.”
The pope also touched on broader societal issues, including the risks posed by “cancel culture” and attempts to reinterpret human rights treaties to serve divisive ideologies. “Cancel culture tolerates no differences, focusing on individual rights at the expense of duties toward others, particularly the most vulnerable,” he warned.
Though battling a cold and unable to deliver the speech himself, Francis’s message underscored the Church’s stance on the moral challenges posed by technology, calling for multilateral cooperation and vigilance to ensure these tools serve the common good rather than divide.
His remarks reflect growing global concerns about the ethical implications of AI and the role of tech companies in shaping democratic dialogue. For Francis, the solution lies in fostering accountability and building media ecosystems that prioritize truth and solidarity over division.
