A fresh wave of violence has struck Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State, as suspected armed herders ambushed traders returning from Oweto Market, resulting in 15 fatalities and several injuries.
On Saturday evening, traders from Ogwumogbo and Okpokpolo communities were attacked by gunmen believed to be herders. The assailants emerged from nearby bushes along the Ifon-Owo road and opened fire on the unsuspecting victims. Fifteen individuals were killed instantly, while others sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
John Ikwulono, a former Vice Chairman of Agatu Local Government, confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers also robbed the victims of their money and belongings before fleeing into the surrounding bushes. “As I speak to you, some persons are still missing,” he added.
This attack is part of a series of violent incidents in Agatu LGA, where communities have faced repeated assaults from suspected herders. In previous weeks, villages such as Ogwumogbo, Ikpele, Okokpolo, and Ejima have been targeted, leading to numerous deaths and displacements.
Godwin Edoh, the member representing Agatu Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, expressed frustration over the persistent attacks and the lack of adequate security response. “Our cry to the government and other security agencies has fallen on deaf ears so we are just left at the mercy of God,” he lamented.
The Benue State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the latest incident. Spokesperson Catherine Anene mentioned she was awaiting a report from the Divisional Police Officer in Agatu.
The recurring violence in Agatu has raised concerns about the safety of residents and the effectiveness of security measures in the region as their Community leaders and residents continue to call for urgent intervention to restore peace and prevent further loss of lives.
