Six people lost their lives, and 14 vehicles were destroyed in a devastating fire following an accident at Karu Bridge in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Wednesday.
The incident, which occurred along the Abuja-Nyanya-Keffi road, caused panic among residents and commuters as thick smoke and flames engulfed the area.
The spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, confirmed this in a statement on Wednesday.
Adeh stated that the accident occurred when a trailer lost control and collided with a stationary vehicle stuck in traffic.
She said: “The impact engulfed fourteen vehicles in a raging inferno. Panic and chaos followed as bystanders and motorists scrambled for safety. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, battling thick smoke and intense heat to rescue those trapped,” the statement added.
“Six victims were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital, but tragically, they were confirmed dead by medical personnel on duty. Their remains have been deposited at Karu General Hospital Morgue.”
She stated that the fire was brought under control with the help of the police, fire service personnel, and other security agencies, allowing normal traffic flow to resume.
“The FCT Police Command extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and assures the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of this disaster and prevent future occurrences.”
