The Anambra State Government has ordered the arrest and prosecution of a security operative linked to the shooting incident at the Onitsha Main Market on Friday.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo also directed that all victims who sustained injuries during the incident be given immediate medical attention.
According to the statement, one of the victims, Miss Chinwe Igwe, was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital. Her body has been deposited in the morgue for autopsy and preservation, while other victims are receiving treatment and are responding to care.
“An investigation into the incident has commenced, and the government will ensure that all necessary measures are taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” the statement read.
It further disclosed that calm has since been restored at the market, with police patrols and monitoring ongoing to ensure sustained peace.
