The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has disclosed that strike will be a thing of the past in Nigerian universities.
The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on University Education, Rep. Abubakar Fulata, made this known in Abuja .
While meeting with the Executive Secretary of the National University Commission (NUC) and Vice-Chancellors of federal universities, he said there will be transformation in the education sector.
“The House leadership had created six committees out of the previous two for quality oversight. The committee is working toward ensuring quality, reliability, easy access, and a rewarding university education.
“It is unfortunate that university education today is facing serious challenges spanning strike actions, cultism, insecurity, drug pedalling, and immoral acts”.
Fulata further highlighted some challenges that requires collective efforts in addressing them, including the intervention of the committee and the contributions of all well-meaning Nigerians.
The acting Executive Secretary, NUC, Prof. Chris Maiyaki, also gave his concerns about the challenges facing the Nigerian universities. He said that with assurity that, with the commitment of National Assembly, some of the problems would be addressed.
Prof Folasade Ogunsola, who represented the Vice-Chancellors, also added that Nigerian universities had the potential to emerge as one of the best in Africa.
