President Bola Tinubu has commended the Super Eagles of Nigeria for keeping the nation’s hope alive in their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Super Eagles on Tuesday defeated the Cheetahs of Benin Republic 4–0 in a decisive qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Striker Victor Osimhen led the charge with a stunning hat-trick, while substitute Frank Onyeka added a fourth goal in the second half to secure a convincing victory for Nigeria and three crucial points in their qualification campaign.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the players for their “hunger, passion, and determination” on the field, noting that their superlative performance has reignited national pride.
“While the job is not yet complete, I join millions of Nigerian football fans in wishing our team every success in the playoffs,” the President said.
Tinubu added that the victory has rekindled optimism among Nigerians, reflecting a shared belief that the country deserves a place in the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
“As your President, I assure you and the coaching crew of the Federal Government’s support as you strive to secure your place at the tournament. Nigerians everywhere believe in you, and I do too. We look forward to seeing you fly our flag proudly on the world stage,” he stated.
