President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his condolences to the family of former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Joy Ogwu, who passed away at the age of 79.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the late diplomat for her exemplary service to the nation and her remarkable contributions to global peace, disarmament, international security, and the advancement of women’s rights.
“Ambassador Ogwu projected Nigeria’s voice with clarity and purpose on the global stage,” the President stated, describing her as a skilled diplomat and scholar who worked tirelessly to advance Nigeria’s interests and strengthen international cooperation.
Ambassador Ogwu represented Nigeria at the United Nations from May 2008 to May 2017.
Before her UN appointment, she served as the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), where she made invaluable contributions to the development of Nigeria’s foreign policy and international relations scholarship.
President Tinubu extended his heartfelt sympathies to Ambassador Ogwu’s five children, grandchildren, siblings, and the entire Ogwu family, as well as to the diplomatic and academic communities mourning her passing.
“Nigeria has lost a trailblazer who rose to the highest level of her vocation through excellence, intellect, and hard work,” the President said.
