President Bola Tinubu has called on African nations to take the lead in shaping global sustainability initiatives, emphasizing the continent’s potential to become a global force for socioeconomic progress.
Speaking ahead of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW 2025), Tinubu highlighted the importance of leveraging Africa’s vast resources, skilled workforce, and economic potential to create solutions that benefit the continent and the world.
In a post on his official X account, the Nigerian President stressed the need for greater collaboration within Africa to foster development.
He said, “We have the resources, the people, and the capacity. We must look inward to improve intra-African trade and collaboration to benefit the African people and the continent. The time for Africa is now. We can. We must. We will.”
Tinubu’s remarks came following discussions with Rwandan President Paul Kagame, focusing on strategies for enhancing Africa’s role in sustainable development. Their dialogue underscored the urgency of addressing global challenges while creating pathways for shared prosperity within Africa.
The Nigerian leader is attending the ADSW 2025 Summit at the invitation of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed Al Nahyan. Running from January 12 to 18 in Abu Dhabi, the summit gathers global policymakers, business leaders, and civil society stakeholders under the theme, “The Nexus of Next; Supercharging Sustainable Progress.”
The event aims to fast-track the transition to sustainable economies by exploring innovative solutions to global environmental and economic challenges. Tinubu’s participation signals Nigeria’s commitment to advancing sustainability both within Africa and on the global stage.
As Africa continues to face pressing issues like climate change, food insecurity, and economic inequality, Tinubu’s call for a united, self-reliant continent highlights a vision of Africa as not only a beneficiary but also a driver of global progress.
