In the era of social media where everyone has become a publisher, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged journalists, especially editors, to always ensure verification, balance, and adherence to professional guidelines in their work.
Speaking on Wednesday at the All Nigerian Editors Conference in Abuja, the President said the rise of social media has amplified both the opportunities and the dangers of modern communication.
“Social media has made every citizen a potential publisher. This has benefits, but it also increases the speed and scale of misinformation,” he said.
“Falsehood can take root before truth has time to speak. In such an environment, the editorial function is more important than ever. Verification must be your anchor, balance must be your principle, and professional judgment must be your guide.”
President Tinubu appealed to journalists to continue upholding the ethics of the profession, noting that their role is crucial to national development and democracy.
He emphasized that criticism of government policies is welcome but should be informed and fair.
“I urge you to continue upholding the standard of journalism report boldly, but do so truthfully,” he said. “Criticise government policies, but do so with knowledge and fairness. Your aim must never be to tear down what we are building together, but to help build a better society.”
The President also acknowledged the vital role of the media in shaping public discourse, strengthening democracy, and promoting accountability.
