A two-storey building under construction in Ikorodu, Lagos State, collapsed on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to nine others. The incident has intensified scrutiny over building safety standards and regulatory enforcement in the region.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the fatalities and reported that nine adult males were rescued and provided with medical attention by the agency’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, stated, “Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that a two-storey building undergoing construction had collapsed, with three victims trapped under the debris. All the bodies have been handed over to Igbogbo Police Station.”
The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined. However, this incident adds to a series of building failures in Lagos, highlighting persistent issues related to construction practices and regulatory compliance.
In a related context, LASEMA has previously attributed building collapses to the use of sub-standard materials and non-compliance with building codes. The agency has urged residents and developers to conduct regular inspections and adhere strictly to construction regulations to prevent such tragedies.
