A 29-year-old footballer, Adeyemi Adewale, tragically passed away during the final match of the Adeleke Memorial Cup in Osogbo, Osun State. The Ilesa West Local Government Area team player reportedly collapsed on the field at Ataoja School of Science on Thursday, sending shockwaves through spectators and participants.
The sudden collapse halted the match as Adewale was immediately rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital. Despite efforts to revive him, medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival.
The Osun State Police Command, in a statement by its spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the incident and noted that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death have commenced.
“Today, (Thursday) while the Adeleke Memorial Cup Final match was going on at Ataoja School of Science, one Adeyemi Adewale ‘M’ 29yrs, a player of Ilesa West Football team, slumped on the pitch.
“He was rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead by a doctor.” The statement reads.
The body of the footballer has since been deposited in the hospital’s morgue.
