A sorrowful mood has gripped Nigerians in the United Kingdom following the untimely passing of Mrs. Olubunmi Okeniyi, who relocated to the European country with her two children just a month prior.
“With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Mrs. Olubunmi Okeniyi, who tragically passed away on 13/10/24, at 4:30 pm in Sunderland, UK,” the Nigerian community in the UK stated.
Mrs. Okeniyi, 49, succumbed to breast cancer on October 13, 2024, leaving behind her husband, Jacob, and their two sons. Her demise has sparked concerns about the welfare of Nigerians relocating to the UK.
Godwin Ejeh, an X user, revealed that Mrs. Okeniyi was aware of her illness before joining her family in the UK. Despite commencing treatment, doctors advised palliative care due to the advanced stage of her cancer.
The community has set up a GoFundMe account to assist with burial expenses, seeking donations to support the grieving family.
“Every contribution, no matter how small, will be deeply appreciated during this difficult time,” the community pleaded.
As of Wednesday, £5,800 had been raised, with £3,557 coming from the GoFundMe campaign.
This heartbreaking incident follows earlier tragedies, including the deaths of Saheed Wahab and an unnamed Nigerian man, who passed away shortly after arriving in the UK.
