Some armed hoodlums suspected to be members of the ‘unknown gunmen’ sect have reportedly murdered a Senatorial candidate of the Labour Party, identified as Oyibo Chukwu, on his way back from a campaign trip in Enugu State.
The horrible incident reportedly happened on Wednesday evening, February 23, 2023. It was gathered that Mr Oyibo Chukwu, a lawyer by Profession, was said to have been on his way back from a campaign trip when his vehicle was ambushed by the armed hooligans.
“The gunmen intercepted Mr Oyibo and his crew along the Amachi road.
They opened fire on the convoy, It was gathered that Mr. Oyibo, his driver and other people in his vehicle, all lost their lives during the attack”.
After shooting the campaign vehicle for several minutes, the gunmen reportedly proceeded to set fire on the vehicle and burn all the occupants inside it before escaping from the scene.
Details of the attack are still quite sketchy and the casualty figures from the attack have not been ascertained.
The Enugu State Police Command is yet to release an official statement concerning the incident.
Mr Oyibo Chukwu, until his death was to contest for the Enugu South East Senatorial District, under the Labour Party, and it was gathered that he had travelled to the rural areas to campaign for votes before he was attacked and killed.
This latest attack is coming barely days before the general elections which Oyibo was supposed to be part of, and on the ballot as a contestant with other candidates seeking to get elected into the position.
Armed hoodlums and other criminal elements have since threatened to disrupt elections, particularly in the South-West region.
