The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned Nigerian travellers against visa overstays, saying the practice could negatively impact future applicants.
In a statement posted Monday on its official X handle, the Mission emphasised strict compliance with U.S. immigration rules.
“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the statement read. “Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”
It also flagged visa fraud and the misuse of travel documents as serious concerns, urging applicants to adhere to the terms of their visas throughout their stay.
The Mission called on the public to help safeguard the integrity of the system, encouraging those with credible information on visa fraud to report through official consular channels.
Reaffirming its stance, the Mission said it remains committed to “supporting safe, legal, and orderly travel between Nigeria and the United States,” while ensuring that law-abiding travellers are not disadvantaged.
