Amidst growing panic among candidates and parents, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has firmly denied claims that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has been cancelled.
The exam body in a statement issued on Sunday, July 20, 2025, WAEC described the viral reports as “false and misleading,” clarifying that no part of the just-concluded examination has been annulled.
The statement, signed by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs, dismissed the alleged cancellation notice as fake and urged the public to disregard it.
“The attention of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has been drawn to a press statement alleging the cancellation of all the papers written during the just concluded WASSCE for School Candidates, 2025,” the council said.
According to WAEC, the forged notice which surfaced online on Saturday, July 19 falsely claimed that the examination had been cancelled by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with WAEC due to alleged widespread malpractice, question leaks, and unauthorised digital distribution of exam materials.
WAEC, however, described the source of the claim as unverified and accused unknown persons of attempting to discredit the council’s integrity and sow unnecessary confusion.
“The WAEC management would like to state unequivocally that the spurious press statement being circulated did not emanate from the council,” the body affirmed. “The said examination has not been cancelled. The false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the council to disrepute.”
Reassuring candidates and the public, the council confirmed that marking of exam scripts has been concluded, and the official release of results is scheduled for Monday, August 4, 2025.
WAEC further reminded the public that official information from the council is only disseminated through verified social media handles and accredited media outlets.
“All press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department of the Council on behalf of the Head of National Office,” the statement noted.
The body called on stakeholders, candidates, and guardians to remain calm and disregard the fake publication.
