The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded alarm on the dangers of misinformation and disinformation, calling on journalists to ensure accurate reporting to protect public health.
The WHO Country Representative in Nigeria, Dr Kazadi Walter Mulombo stated this at a two day media capacity workshop in Abuja.
The theme of the worskshop is “Empowering Journalists to Drive the Change Narrative with Compelling Data-Driven Health Stories,” is aimed at equipping journalists with the skills to combat misinformation.
Dr. Mulombo stressed that health journalists are vital stakeholders in the public health sector, responsible for disseminating accurate information to the public.
“By promoting fact-based reporting, journalists can help prevent the spread of misinformation and support public health initiatives.
We see our journalists as critical partners in this journey. We want them to be our eyes and ensure that all information being given out is backed by the right data and information.”
The Country Representative highlighted that misinformation has devastating consequences, from spreading unnecessary fear to prompting harmful actions among the populace.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, false rumors and infodemic caused panic among people in the communities.
It brought unprecedented changes to the world, with countries shifting towards a “One Health” approach and accelerating Universal Health Coverage during emergencies .
He further disclosed that fake news and infodemic usually spread very fast encouraged Journalists to be strategic in their approach.
Dr Mulombo commended journalists for their vital work, acknowledging their responsibility in shaping public perception. “Most times, the populace does not know what is happening but relies on journalists for critical information.
In Nigeria, where information can quickly go viral, We are acknowledging the importance of cautious information dissemination.
We are always here to provide answers to journalists and the communities.”
Dr. Mulombo concluded by recognizing journalists as a crucial force in the development world , stating, that “You are doing a great job. We want you to know that you are an important force in the civil society space.”
