The Federal Government has re-emphasized the need for cross sector collaboration and partnership to maximize limited resources available to build reslient Health Sector in Nigeria , adding that cross-sector collaborations in the pursuit of sustainable solutions are essential for addressing complex health challenges.
The Special Adviser to the President on Health DrSalma Ibrahim Anas noted this while giving an address on “Cross-Sector Collaborations for Sustainable Solutions in the Health System: The One Health Perspective ” during the close out ceremony of Academic of Public Health by west African Institute of Public Health in Abuja.
Dr Salma Ibrahim Anas stated that One Health emphasizes collaboration among multiple sectors – human health, animal health, and environmental management – to optimize health outcomes for all. This approach she said ensures that programs, policies, legislations, and research initiatives are designed to account for these interdependencies and to find solutions that benefit all sectors
“Today, we stand at the crossroads of global health challenges, where the interplay between human, animal, and environmental health has never been more apparent. The One Health approach offers a collaborative, multi-sectoral, and transdisciplinary strategy to address these complex health issues. As we navigate a world marked by ongoing health crises, the importance of coordinated cross-sector collaborations becomes increasingly evident. This presentation aims to shed light on the significance of One Health, sustainable development, and health security in the pursuit of sustainable solutions for our health systems. “
She added that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has recognized the importance of the One Health approach in addressing public health challenges, hence the One Health Strategic Plan in Nigeria outlines a roadmap for implementing One Health principles.
“It emphasizes the need for collaboration between human, animal, and environmental health sectors, recognizing that the health of each sector impacts the others. The plan is a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to finding sustainable solutions to complex health issues through crosssector collaboration. It aims to improve coordination, communication, and data sharing among these sectors, strengthening the disease surveillance system and promoting a holistic approach to health security. “
Additionally, the Director General West African Institute of Public Health Dr Francis Ohanyido encouraged team spirit in the mission to achieving proper Universal Health Coverage.
He called on the Young Health Professionals to be focused on the mission of envolving knowledge in public health as a tool to access and give values in the health sector.
“Public Health is about all of us which was clearly shown during the pandemic, we need to reconsider and localize what we mean by public health or global health, we as Africans need to work together to define what is right for us as regards health line, we need to connect to impact the common flame of Public health” He advised.
In her address to the Inductees, the President Africa Public Health Dr Ferhat Khan urged them to work together with the institute for the well being of the Africa Continient.
According to her, tremendous impressive output were noted during the internship with the young professionals, she expressed confidence in them and demand action on their part.
However, the Senior Technical Advisor on Public Health at the dRPC Zainab Yaro representing the Executive Director — Dr Judith Ann Walker, retrieated commitment towards the cause of the institute and promised further future Collaborations.

In times of adversity and triumph, your organization has consistently shown the same level of “dedication and resilience that defines our Common mission. Your unwavering support, collaborative spirit, and the synergy we have achieved are a source of inspiration to all of us. This showed in our past collaboration under the Partnership for Advocacy in Child and Family Health at scale project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation from 2020- 2022. During this collaboration we also supported the Young Public health professionals programme of this esteemed Academy. “
