The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has explained that the enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages in sachets and in PET and glass bottles below 200ml is aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm, particularly among youths.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated this while addressing journalists, citing concerns over the easy accessibility and abuse of such products.
According to her, the decision followed extensive consultations with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and industry stakeholders.
Prof. Adeyeye clarified that the policy is not intended to prohibit alcohol consumption, but to protect public health, noting that approved alcoholic products remain legal when packaged in compliant formats.
She reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment to firm but fair enforcement nationwide in collaboration with relevant agencies, while engaging stakeholders responsibly.
She also called for the cooperation of the public and industry players, stressing that the protection of lives and public health remains the agency’s foremost priority.
