FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has defended the constitutional process of impeachment, stating that there is nothing wrong if the Rivers State House of Assembly removes Governor Siminalayi Fubara for alleged infractions.
He dismissed claims that such an action would lead to chaos, insisting that “nothing will happen.”
The minister stated that there is no issue if the lawmakers choose to remove Fubara over alleged impeachable offenses, including withholding their salaries for several months.
Former Rivers State Governor, stated this at a media parley in Abuja on Wednesday.
“If you have committed an offence to be impeached, what’s wrong? Is it a criminal offence? It’s provided in the constitution. Am I a member of the Assembly?
“If you have committed an infraction of the constitution and the Assembly deems it fit to say, you should be impeached.
“I have heard people say: ‘Oh, if they impeach him, there will be a breakdown of law and order’. Rubbish! Nothing will happen.”
On Friday, February 28, 2025, the Supreme Court delivered a series of rulings regarding the ongoing political crisis in the oil-rich South-South state.
In a judgment read by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, the five-member panel of the court unanimously dismissed the cross-appeal filed by Fubara, which challenged the legitimacy of the House of Assembly led by Amaewhule as Speaker.
With the dismissal of Fubara’s appeal, the court ordered Amaewhule to immediately resume sittings alongside other elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
