In a significant move to enhance access to potable water in Abuja’s satellite communities, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, inaugurated the Lot 2 expansion of the water supply project in Karu on Thursday.
This initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving infrastructure and living standards across the FCT.
The Karu water supply project aims to extend clean water access to Karu, Orozo, Kurudu, and neighboring areas. With an expedited timeline, the construction is expected to be completed by June next year, facilitated by the President’s approval of 50% upfront payment to contractors.
Emphasizing the project’s importance, Minister Wike stated, during his visit to kurudu , Karu local government.
“Water is key; water is life; water is even more important than roads because we can’t do without water.”
He highlighted the government’s dedication to fulfilling its promises
“This is one of the promises made by Mr. President when he commissioned the Abuja Greater Water project in June… We have started with Bwari and AMAC area councils.”
Addressing the community, Wike urged support for the project’s timely completion:
“I appeal to the community leaders and our youths to see that we should support the company so that they will be able to finish this job on time.”
He assured residents of the benefits
“You will no longer depend on digging your own borehole, drinking water that is not treated; now you will drink water that will give you good health.”
The Karu project is part of a broader initiative to provide clean water across all FCT area councils by 2027. Similar projects have been initiated in Bwari, with plans for Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada, and Abaji in the pipeline. These efforts are expected to create approximately 1,600 jobs, contributing to the region’s economic development.
The flag-off of the Karu water supply project marks a pivotal step in addressing water scarcity in Abuja’s satellite towns. It reflects the government’s commitment to equitable infrastructure development and the well-being of all FCT residents.
