In a passionate message for World Health Day 2025, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has urged both government and society to make urgent strides towards reducing maternal and newborn mortality rates in Nigeria.
The First Lady underscored the critical need for comprehensive investment in healthcare systems that ensure safe pregnancies, childbirth, and postnatal care for women and children across the country.
Reflecting on the theme for World Health Day 2025, “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” Tinubu emphasized that despite significant advancements in healthcare, preventable deaths during pregnancy and childbirth remain a major challenge.
“Every day, far too many women and newborns lose their lives due to preventable complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. No mother should have to risk her life to bring a child into the world, and no newborn should be denied a fair chance at survival.” she said.
Tinubu reiterated that prioritizing maternal and newborn health is not just an ethical obligation, but also an essential component of Nigeria’s long-term development strategy.
The First Lady also expressed gratitude to healthcare professionals across the country, recognizing their tireless efforts in improving health outcomes despite often challenging circumstances. She called on all stakeholders to unite in addressing the root causes of maternal and newborn mortality, including inadequate healthcare facilities, lack of skilled personnel, and limited access to essential services in rural areas.
As Nigeria joins the global community in observing World Health Day 2025, Tinubu urged citizens to continue advocating for a more equitable healthcare system that ensures every woman and child receives the care they deserve.
