In a recent development, the Ebonyi state Ministry of Health has revealed 10 fatalities within the state between January 4 and February 16th, 2024.
According to Mr. Sampson Orogwu, the Disease Surveillance Notification Officer of the ministry, “25 persons were infected, including two healthcare workers.”
He highlighted the demographic breakdown, stating that 16 out of the 25 infected persons are males, while nine are females.
“The deceased include a pregnant woman and two children.The affected local government areas span Onicha, Ikwo, Ezza North, Ebonyi, Izzi, Ohaukwu, and Abakaliki, with particular hotspots identified in the Hausa quarters and Nkaliki areas of Abakaliki.”
Expressing concern and urging prompt action, Orogwu implored residents to “report suspected cases to the ministry as treatment is free.
The State Epidemiologist, Dr Ogbonna Nwambeke emphasized the collaborative and preventive efforts underway to contain the outbreak.
“We call for the provision of logistics to increase surveillance and community engagement against risk factors”.
Nwambeke outlined key precautions,by advising individuals to refrain from bush burning, avoid consumption of rats, and to maintain rigorous personal and environmental hygiene practices.
“People are also advised to stop bush burning, avoid eating rats and not to touch any surface touched by an infected person,” he said.
Nwambeke expressed gratitude for the provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to health workers, emphasizing their critical role in combating the outbreak.
