In a bold move to curb rising incidents of violence, The Federal Ministry of Education has unveiled a sweeping new policy aimed at tackling bullying in Unity College, stating that a mandated indefinite suspension for any student found guilty of physically assaulting another student in a manner that causes bodily harm.
The decision was revealed in a memo from the Ministry, signed by Permanent Secretary Nasir Gwarzo, which draws attention to the growing issue of bullying and the devastating impact it has on students.
Recall that On November 7, 2024, the Federal Government acted decisively by suspending 13 students for six weeks, following their involvement in a bullying incident at the Federal Government College in Enugu. The incident, which involved a group of senior secondary school students physically assaulting a peer, was captured in a video that went viral on social media, sparking outrage across the country.
In response, the Ministry of Education has outlined a stricter approach to discipline, warning that any student found guilty of bullying that results in bodily injury will face immediate and indefinite suspension.
The statement reads, “The attention of the ministry has been drawn to the cruel and inhuman acts of physical assault that inflict bodily injury on other students by fellow students or groups of students.
“In addition to the punishments in the ministry’s approved uniform guidelines for offences and punishments, the ministry has directed that henceforth, any student or group of students found culpable of physical assault leading to bodily injury on another student or group of students will be suspended indefinitely from the college.
“Ensure that you comply strictly with the content of this circular and inform the SBMC members and parents accordingly.
“College administrators have been instructed to strictly comply with the new directive and to inform Student-Based Management Committee members and parents accordingly.”
