The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed grief over the demise of Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the respected leader of Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group.
This was stated in a statement issued by the party.
Adebanjo, a renowned journalist, lawyer, nationalist, and politician, died peacefully at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State, on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96 .
The APC described Adebanjo as an irreplaceable patriot whose contributions to Nigeria’s socio-political landscape are invaluable and indelible. As a core Awoist, he was a relentless advocate for true federalism and progressivism, and his role in sustaining the struggle for democracy in Nigeria is legendary.
The party extended its condolences to Adebanjo’s family, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Yoruba nation, and the government and people of Ogun State.
Vice President Kashim Shettima also paid tribute to Adebanjo, describing him as an “advocate of an equitable and progressive Nigeria” and a “living bridge that connected us to the foundational struggles of our democracy” .
It was disclosed that Adebanjo’s passing has sent shockwaves across Nigeria, with tributes pouring in from all corners. He will be remembered for his tireless advocacy for justice, equity, and good governance, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of activists and political leaders.
