ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke has slammed state governors for establishing new universities solely to tap into the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), describing it as a misappropriation of the fund’s purpose.
He made the disclosure in an interview on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief” program.
Osodeke emphasized that TETFund was created to provide supplemental funding, not to bear the full weight of funding universities.
“Its an intervention fund but there are people who want to have access to that money from the political circle, from the bureaucratic circle, at all cost. We are struggling with that.
“Any Governor today establishing a university is eyeing TETFund as a source of funding”, he said.
He argued that federal and state governments should be responsible for funding their respective universities, rather than relying on TETFund.
“Some state governors rely on TETFund to finance their newly established universities, rather than taking responsibility for funding them themselves.”
The ASUU president is calling for a stakeholders’ meeting to examine how TETFund allocations are being spent.
“There should be a stakeholders’ meeting that will include university community; lecturers, and student groups that will focus on how the funds were allocated and how it was spent”, he said.
