Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church (CGCC), Pastor Tunde Bakare, has said the late former President Muhammadu Buhari fought the battle against corruption to the best of his ability during his time in office.
Speaking during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Monday, Bakare noted that although Buhari’s efforts might not have met the expectations of some Nigerians, he gave his all to the anti-corruption fight.
“A lot of accusations went, but nobody could pin any corruption on him. He fought the battle against corruption to the best of his ability. His best may not be good enough for some people, but he has done his best,” he said.
Bakare also spoke about his personal encounters with the former president, describing him as a man who defied common stereotypes.
“I thought he was a religious fundamentalist until I came close,” he said.
Recalling a moment during their 2011 presidential campaign under the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Bakare said: “After the flag off of our campaign in Kaduna, we rode in the same car. We got home to his place and he staggered, the next word he spoke, God is my witness, was ‘Jesus Christ of Nazareth’.”
Surprised by the expression, Bakare said he asked Buhari about it and the former president replied: “You do not have the monopoly of Jesus Christ, I’m thanking God.”
He added that many of Buhari’s aides, including his long-time driver and bodyguards, were Christians—countering widespread assumptions about the former leader’s religious leanings.
