The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has
discovered during surveillance the fraudulent sale of a counterfeit paracetamol injection that has been incorrectly labeled as “Paracetamol Injection 300mg/2ml I.M I.V Aminoglycoside Antibacteria”.
The discovery of this deceitful product occurred during a surveillance operation conducted by NAFDAC’s post-marketing surveillance unit in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
According to the agency “Subsequently, samples of the falsified product were subjected to laboratory analysis at the NAFDAC Laboratory in Kaduna. The results of the analysis revealed that the product contained only paracetamol.
“Paracetamol injection is typically utilized as an analgesic and antipyretic to address mild to moderate pain and fever. Aminoglycosides, on the other hand, represent a class of antibiotics employed in the treatment of severe bacterial infections that are challenging to manage. Contrary to its labeling, NAFDAC clarified that the identified product is not an aminoglycoside antibacterial”, the body stated.
The regulatory body added that the certificate of registration provided, has confirmed the fraudulent nature of the identified paracetamol injection.
“This underscores the importance of public awareness and vigilance in safeguarding against the consumption of counterfeit pharmaceuticals”.
NAFDAC also emphasized that the authentic Paracetamol Injection 300mg/2ml I.M I.V is manufactured by Shandong Shenglu Pharm. Co. Ltd in China and distributed by Sifam Life Care Pharmaceutical Ltd. in Kano, Nigeria.
“We registered the product specifically as an analgesic, not an aminoglycoside antibacterial.”
