In a proactive move to mitigate the risks associated with tanker fire incidents, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has organized a comprehensive awareness program in Edo State with the initiative aims to educate stakeholders and the public on preventive measures and emergency response strategies related to tanker fires.
Mr. Kenoma Ojudeerie, Head of NEMA’s Benin Operations Office, emphasized the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols by tanker operators and the need for continuous public education.
“Disasters such as tanker accidents and fire outbreaks occur unexpectedly. It is essential to cultivate a culture of preparedness, awareness, and effective response, particularly at the grassroots.”
Expert presentations from the Federal Fire Service, FRSC, and the Ministry of Public Security and Safety provided valuable insights into fire safety practices, emergency response, and preventive measures.
A significant highlight of the program was a hands-on community sensitization exercise in Ologbo, along the Benin–Sapele expressway, focusing on best practices and fire safety awareness for tanker drivers and residents.

The sensitization program, brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Public Security and Safety, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), National Orientation Agency (NOA), Red Cross, federal and state fire services, Edo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), civil society organizations, and NEMA/NYSC Emergency Management Vanguards (EMVs).
