The Nigerian Association for Cleft Lip and Palate (NACLP) is working to standardize cleft care nationwide, ensuring everyone receives high-quality care.
The President of NACLP Prof. Fadikemi Ogini urges an end to stigma and harm against children with cleft lip and palate, emphasizing that these conditions are treatable and affected children can lead normal lives.
She made this statement during the fifth Annual Scientific Conference in Kano, which focused on “Standardising Cleft Care in Nigeria.”
Ogini urged Nigerians to cease stigmatizing or harming children born with cleft lip and palate.
“The conditions are treatable, enabling affected children to lead normal lives.
We aim to enhance the quality of life”, she said.
She encouraged those who can support cleft care to contact the association to help provide necessary care. In his keynote address, Prof. Peter Donko,
The immediate past President of the West African College of Surgeons, Prof Peter Donko noted that cleft lip and palate are global issues, with Africa being particularly affected due to poverty, lack of resources, and inadequate manpower.
He emphasized the need for collaboration with organizations and governments to provide resources for treating children born with congenital defects.
